Chapter 14
After the depressing meeting I’m thinking, what a waste of billions of dollars. Money spent to prepare for disasters did nothing but generate reports. We can’t eat reports, and we can’t use them for shelter. We don’t even have an inventory on available useable shelters. Much of the medical supplies are out of date. Even a single nuclear weapon will overwhelm our burn units, and we can’t ramp up additional supplies in forty-eight hours. What a total waste of money. I hope that those who thought government could do everything better than anyone else are the first to find out the money paid for nothing but reports. Reports that were never read. Reports that are most likely stored someplace.
The only organized group I can count on is the military. I’ve issued orders to emergency recall everyone who was retired within the last five years. Those recalled are flooding back to their bases. We’re going to need as many people as possible, people who are used to acting and are trained to follow orders. First things first, I have decided to address the country this evening. I’ve been advised that I’m going to cause mass panic and I’ll do more harm than good, however if even a small number of people can get away to a safe location than I’m doing the right thing. Sooner versus later someone is going to leak the information. When that happens, all hell is going to break lose. I’d rather give some people a little time than have more deaths on my soul.
At nine PM EDT I sat in the oval office wearing the darkest blue suit I owned, I sat behind this desk depressed and sad. I know my speech is going travel around the world potentially causing mass panic. I refused any makeup; I wanted to look as concerned as I felt; I want the people to see I’m concerned. “Good evening America, I’ve come before you this evening with a very heavy heart. My message to you is a very grave one. I’m going to ask everyone listening to try to stay calm and hear me out. I know the natural reaction to someone asking you to stay calm is to panic, so let’s take a moment and scream together. Yes, I mean it, everyone scream as loud as you can. Scream at the injustice, scream at the shame of what’s going to take place. Let’s scream together to get it out of the way. SCREAM, Feel better? I know I do. I’ve wanted to do that for a few days now.
“I know all of you have questions. The internet has been filled with stories of every possible type, Aliens are invading, the biblical flood is going to take place again, the world is going to end, a giant comet is going to hit Earth, World War III is starting, some portal to another dimension has opened. Demons are about to take over the planet. Have I missed any? I’m sure I have.
